Legally all dogs have to be restrained in vehicles. In fact the highway code says the following:
Rule 57 of the highway code states: “When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.”
If a dog is in the car, they should either be strapped in, attached to something, in a crate or behind a dog guard. However it can be a little bit confusing about what is best for your dog.
So personally, I feel that crates, proper car crates, are the safest option for our dogs. In some cases such as the TransK9 and Mimsafe are actually crash tested. Both of these sites explains how their crates are crash tested and one even has testominals of people who have been in accidents and how their dogs are safe because of their crates. As you can see these crates come with a high price! However that is due to the fact they go through all this testing.
The standard wire crates we can buy in every shop are great, they make a safe space for our pets – at home. These crates are not robust and if you are in an accident they fall in on themselves, which can then cause damage to your dog. This is why we would recommend getting a proper dog crate for travelling.
In the photo above you can see our dogs in the back of the car, due to having four large dogs we can’t fit them in a crate!
As we can’t fit all the dogs in a crate we have a tailgate. We have had them previously made by different companies but none of them are crash tested. We came across the variogate, made by Mimsafe. It has also been crash tested and has a lock on each door, also with the ability to add a padlock for extra security. We already had a dog guard but you can also buy a dog guard and divider from them that all work together so you can create two ‘crates’ in the back of the car. This can be beneficial if you want to be able to use the boot of the car and have the dogs in a section of it.
We can also highly recommend the customer service, they have been brilliant from the start to finish. Mimsafe make all their crates and the variogate cage adjustable so that you can find the right size for your dog and it will adjust at certain points to then fit the car. If you need advice then message them because as I said they have been nothing but helpful. The Transk9 crates are also really good but you need the right size crate for the car you have, so they aren’t as flexible. The same can be said for other tailgates too. We have tried a few different crates and tailgates over the years and by far the mimsafe one has been our favourite. They also do crates to go on backseats if need be, so regardless of where your dog is in the vehicle they are safe.
Are your dogs safe if you have a crash in the car?
